pedemont/pedemonte/piemonte/piedmont (/ˈpiːdmɒnt/ PEED-mont; Italian: Piemonte, pronounced [pjeˈmonte]; Piedmontese and Occitan: Piemont; French: Piémont) is one of the 20 regions of Italy. The capital of Piedmont is Turin.
The Pedemont name is uncommon, even in Italy. It is believed to have originated in the Piemonte (Piedmont) region in the country’s north west, where the family name and the province have shared a close connection for generations. Unlike many surnames that evolved from occupations or nicknames, Pedemont remains closely tied to a place and a history.
Like many Italian families during the 1800s, changing politics, economic hardship and the upheaval surrounding the Italian Wars of Independence encouraged many to seek a new life abroad. Australia became home to a number of those families, including members of the Pedemont family who arrived before the turn of the twentieth century.
